Cardiac Surgery Research Program

Cardiac Surgery Research

Robust Clinical Research Program

The Section of Cardiac Surgery is actively involved in a wide range of basic science and clinical research on cardiac and thoracic diseases. Scientists within the section utilize bench, outcomes and translational techniques in an effort to improve patient outcomes and prevent disease progression. Some of our ongoing research includes: ischemia reperfusion, the molecular basis of heart failure, lung immunology and transplantation (Learn More).

Students in the Ambassadorship Program are directly integrated into the Section’s research and help with a variety of tasks in the clinical research setting. With direct student involvement through independent and mentorship guided work, the team’s research output has increased significantly. Within three years of the program’s conception, the number of publications from the cardiac surgery team increased by 420% and the number of active studies increased by 633%.
